Simultaneous drone attacks took place at dawn on Tuesday in Erbil, northern Iraq. One prong targeted the US Consulate, but international coalition warplanes intervened and shot down the drones.
According to local media sources, explosions were heard in the skies over Erbil, and warplanes of the international coalition stationed in the region to fight ISIS took off. The coalition aircraft neutralized the drones heading toward the US Consulate in the Halifan area.
Meanwhile, headquarters belonging to Iranian Kurdish parties in the Bahreka and Halifan areas north of Erbil also came under attack. A drone struck the Ciznikan Camp of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I) in Bahreka. The vehicle that crashed into a house inside the camp caused no casualties.
In Halifan, the headquarters of the Kurdistan Toilers' Party (Komala), which opposes the Iranian government, was hit by two drones. This attack also caused material damage.
It is not yet known who carried out the attacks, and no group has claimed responsibility.
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah have been the scene of frequent drone and rocket attacks in recent months. On July 17, eight bomb-laden drones were shot down in Erbil, and nine people were killed in a rocket attack on the Komala camp in Sulaymaniyah. Last Friday, five drones were neutralized over Erbil.
Tensions in the region have been running high since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February. The ceasefire agreement reached on June 18, 2026, collapsed in early July due to a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, and mutual attacks resumed. Although clashes have halted since last Friday, mediators are trying to bring the parties back to the negotiating table.
