Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup. The star, whose Portugal side were eliminated in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Spain, announced that this tournament was his last World Cup.
In a statement after the match, he said, "The truth is that this was my last World Cup participation. As for my future, I will think carefully to avoid making hasty decisions."
The 41-year-old Ronaldo set two international records by scoring 146 goals in 233 matches for Portugal. As captain of the Portugal team that won the 2016 European Championship, he also won the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025.
Speaking to French radio station Monte Carlo, Ronaldo said, "The biggest trophy I won with Portugal was Euro 2016, which for me is as important as the World Cup. So after doing my best, I bid farewell to the World Cup with a clear conscience. Tomorrow is a new day and life will go on."
Ronaldo, the all-time top scorer in European Championship history, scored a total of 14 goals in the tournament. The star, who plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, said, "I won three trophies with Portugal. Before Cristiano, there were no trophies, so I am happy."
Ronaldo said, "Of course I am sad to be eliminated from the World Cup in this way, but as I said at Sunday's press conference, I did my best and I leave with a clear conscience."
The Portuguese star concluded by saying, "A footballer's life is about winning and losing, and life must go on."
