The Egyptian Football Association announced that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee had suspended national team head coach Hossam Hassan and team official Ibrahim Hassan for three matches each, and player Mustafa Abdelraouf Zico for five matches.
The FIFA decisions were linked to events following the match between Egypt and Argentina in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, as well as statements made during that period. Argentina won the match 3-2.
Egypt camp reacts to refereeing decisions
Egypt objected to several refereeing decisions during the match. Zico’s goal was disallowed on the grounds that a foul had been committed before the play, while the Egyptian team called for a penalty in the closing stages.
Hossam Hassan criticized the refereeing after the match. Hassan implied that Argentina and Lionel Messi had been given preferential treatment for commercial reasons and also announced that he would not follow the remaining matches of the tournament.

Zico, meanwhile, criticized the decisions of French referee François Letexier and argued that the match had not been officiated fairly.
Association requests grounds for decisions
The Egyptian Football Association requested detailed justifications and the grounds for each of the three suspensions from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. The association said it would assess the legal situation after reviewing the information and determine the steps to be taken to appeal in line with the relevant regulations.
FIFA had launched disciplinary proceedings against the three individuals in August over events and statements following the match.
