Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said during a phone call on Wednesday that media reports and content published on social media platforms about relations between the two countries should not be relied upon.
The talks focused on strengthening the fraternal and strategic ties between Egypt and Saudi Arabia and containing regional tensions. The two ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to developing bilateral cooperation in various fields.
Egypt-Saudi coordination to be strengthened
According to a statement from Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty received a phone call from his Saudi counterpart, bin Farhan. The two sides discussed strengthening institutional cooperation mechanisms between the countries.
They discussed preparations for the first meeting of the Egypt-Saudi High Coordination Council, in line with the directives of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The two foreign ministers also discussed preparations for the next meeting of the political consultation mechanism planned at the ministerial level.
Call for diplomacy over regional tensions
Abdelatty and bin Farhan exchanged views on rapid developments in the region. They assessed efforts by regional partners, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia, to de-escalate tensions, contain the situation and return to the diplomatic process.
The two officials stressed the need to address security concerns, protect the sovereignty of states and prevent attacks against states. The ministers called for preventing the conflict from expanding and called for the security, safety and freedom of navigation on international waterways to be maintained.
The talks also addressed ways to make the work of the regional quadrilateral mechanism comprising Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan more effective in reducing tensions and supporting regional security and stability.
U.S.-Iran tensions continue
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his country had various options regarding Iran, including continuing negotiations, intensifying attacks or tightening economic pressure.
Since February 28, waves of military clashes have taken place in the region, alongside negotiations between the United States and Iran. Iran said attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran had killed 3,000 people, while Americans and Israelis had been killed in Iran's counterattacks.
Iran also said it had targeted U.S. military facilities and equipment in the region. Some of those attacks resulted in civilian deaths and damage to civilian facilities.
