Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell in New York during the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. During Tuesday's meeting, the two sides assessed regional developments related to Palestine, Sudan, Yemen and Iran, along with ways to improve bilateral relations.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the sides discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the political, economic and investment fields and to maintain the recent momentum in bilateral relations.
British investment and trade
Abdelatty called for intensified joint efforts to increase UK investment in Egypt, strengthen the economic and trade partnership, and support development projects serving the shared interests of the two countries.
The Egyptian foreign minister said greater use should be made of the opportunities offered by the Egypt-UK partnership agreement. He said facilitating access for Egyptian products to the UK market would increase trade volume.
The UK has approximately £20.7 billion, or about $27.56 billion, in cumulative investments in Egypt through more than 2,100 companies operating in various sectors, particularly energy. Trade between the two countries reached approximately £2.8 billion in 2025, with £1.5 billion accounting for Egypt's exports and £1.3 billion for the UK's exports.
Palestine and regional crises
On the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty welcomed the UK government's decision to ban imports of goods from illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. He also expressed support for the UK's decision to ban trade in services that support the expansion of the settlements.
On September 8, the UK banned imports of goods from illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and announced measures targeting services that support settlement expansion. In response, Israel took steps including closing the British consulate in Jerusalem and banning 12 British citizens from entering the country.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the borders of June 4, 1967, and rejected forced displacement. He said US President Donald Trump's plan should be implemented to stop the war in Gaza.
On Sudan, Abdelatty said Egypt continued to support the country's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national institutions. He called for a sustainable end to the conflict and a comprehensive political solution.
War has continued in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023. According to United Nations estimates, tens of thousands of people have been killed and approximately 13 million displaced in the conflict.
The sides also discussed developments in Yemen and the war involving Iran. Abdelatty stressed the need to reduce tensions and prioritize political solutions. He also called for the security and freedom of maritime navigation to be guaranteed in line with international law.
