Egypt's Cairo Criminal Court sentenced 12 defendants to death in a case involving charges of procuring substances used in the production of synthetic drugs, as well as production and trafficking.
Television presenter and producer Sarah Khalifa was among the 12 defendants sentenced to death on September 5, 2026. The case involved a total of 28 defendants; the court sentenced nine to life imprisonment and acquitted seven.

Khalifa and 20 defendants appealed the verdict on September 15, 2026. The death sentences are therefore not legally final, and there is no confirmed information that the sentences have been carried out.
The case is based on charges of procuring substances used in the production of synthetic drugs, as well as production and trafficking. Under Egyptian law, drug trafficking is among the offenses punishable by death.
Khalifa was also sentenced to five years in prison in a separate case.
