Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and developments concerning alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement during a phone call on Tuesday.
Berri said action was needed to end the destruction caused by attacks targeting towns and villages, particularly in southern Lebanon. He warned that inaction at the regional and international levels in the face of the attacks would have “dangerous consequences.”
Cooperation between Iran and Muslim countries
The call also covered developments in Lebanon and the region, the situation in the Gulf, and efforts to support regional security and stability. The talks included efforts to strengthen Iran’s cooperation with Arab and Muslim countries, particularly the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Berri thanked Iran for its support for Lebanon. He also said Tehran continued to prioritize ending Israel’s attacks on Lebanon under the terms of the understanding signed with the United States.
Attacks in Lebanon and the ceasefire arrangement
Lebanon has faced two deadly attacks since October 2023. The attacks caused widespread destruction across the country, heavily damaged infrastructure and housing, and increased economic losses.
Lebanon and Israel signed a U.S.-backed framework agreement in Washington on June 26. The agreement provides for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the areas vacated.
However, Israel has continued its attacks on southern Lebanon and still holds some areas in the south of the region. Some of these areas were seized decades ago, while others were captured during more recent wars and military operations.
