A military zone belonging to the Navy in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province came under an airstrike. Konarak Governor Hamid Younes Haghani announced that the area overlooking the Gulf of Oman was hit in two phases by enemy fighter jets on Thursday evening.
Governor Haghani stated, “The military zone belonging to the Navy in Konarak, overlooking the Gulf of Oman, was subjected to a two-phase attack by enemy fighter jets on Thursday evening.”
The governor said ambulances and security units were dispatched to the scene after the attack, adding that an investigation into the details of the attack was ongoing. Haghani also called on citizens to remain calm and to only rely on official statements.
The US side made no statement regarding the attack. The development came against the backdrop of escalating US-Iran tensions in the Gulf region in recent days.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) had earlier announced on Thursday that it carried out new strikes targeting Iran’s air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, and naval capabilities. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have struck American military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, warning they would expand their operations if US attacks continued.
The tension in the region has persisted since the military conflict between the US-Israel and Iran began on February 28. Despite a memorandum of understanding signed on June 18 and negotiations mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, tensions continue to rise.
