Brigadier General (Ret.) Dror Shalom, former head of the Political-Security Department of Israel's Ministry of Defense, described Israel's war on Gaza as a "major failure." Shalom said that since October 2023, no decisive outcome has been achieved on any strategic front.
Speaking at a conference organized by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), the former official noted that Israel's international standing has fallen to an all-time low. Shalom said, "Even relations with the US are not at their best."
Shalom, who left his post in March and held key positions in the security bureaucracy for decades, gave his first media interview with this speech. According to Israel's Army Radio, Shalom said, "Strategically, the war is a complete fiasco."
The former security chief noted that Hamas is still standing, Hezbollah is far from disarmed, and Iran's nuclear program has only been partially rolled back but continues to exist.
Addressing the next government, Shalom said that action must be taken to improve Israel's global standing. Stating that a political initiative to create an alternative to Hamas is needed, Shalom suggested that there are historic opportunities in Syria and Lebanon, that an understanding could be reached with the Syrian president, and that a peace agreement could be signed with Lebanon.
The former official, calling for stronger ties with Egypt and Jordan, criticized: "We are neglecting this issue; our state leaders never meet with officials from these two countries."
Shalom, assessing the return of Israeli captives from Gaza as "one of the war's few achievements," argued that it was made possible thanks to pressure exerted on the US administration by protesters. Criticizing the government's performance, he said, "The captives could have been brought back earlier and in greater numbers; decisive steps could have been taken at an early stage."
Shalom said he expects a formal commission of inquiry into the failure and that he will be the first to appear before it. He added that it would be appropriate to open an official investigation into both the Palestinian and Iranian files.
Since October 8, 2023, Israel has been waging a war of destruction on Gaza and has expanded its military operations to Lebanon and Iran. The Tel Aviv administration has repeatedly attacked Syria and Yemen, while escalating its aggression in the occupied West Bank.
Despite ceasefire agreements in Gaza and Lebanon, Israel violates them daily; the violations cause loss of life and material damage.
