Four activists who were detained for about a month in Libya as part of a Gaza aid flotilla have been released.
The Global Sumud Flotilla group announced on Wednesday that Tunisian Achraf Khoja, Uruguayan Matias Rodriguez, and Italians Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia had reached Tunisia. According to the group, six more activists are expected to be released within 24 hours.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani welcomed the news of the freed Italians. In a post on social media, he stated that the two Italians, along with Uruguayan Rodriguez, who also holds Italian citizenship, were handed over to the Italian consul in Benghazi and will return to Italy on Wednesday.
Detention process
Last month, more than 400 activists attempting to reach Gaza by sea were detained in international waters. The activists held in Libya were part of a separate group aiming to reach the area by land. The Global Sumud Flotilla also reported that the activists were on a hunger strike to protest their detention.
According to Amnesty International, on May 24, 2026, an armed group affiliated with Khalifa Haftar, who holds de facto authority in eastern and southern Libya, captured 10 humanitarian activists from eight different countries while they were traveling to the city of Sirte. The activists had set out to negotiate with local authorities for their convoy's passage through Libya and Egypt to Gaza. Throughout the detention period, the activists' families and human rights organizations called for their release.
The released activists are reported to be in good health. The other activists are expected to be freed shortly.
