The Israeli military carried out more than 10 airstrikes on southern Lebanon within approximately 60 minutes after 4:00 PM local time on Friday. These attacks occurred despite reports in Israeli and American media that a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah had come into effect at that hour.
On the same day, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 47 people were killed and 97 injured as a result of intense Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon. This marks the most severe clash recorded since the US-Iran agreement, signed on Wednesday evening, which envisioned ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Israel's Channel 12 reported that an unnamed official confirmed that the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah came into effect at 4:00 PM local time. The official stated, "We remain in the security zone and will respond if they attack us."
The area Israel refers to as a "security zone" denotes a buffer zone along the border within Lebanese territory, several kilometers deep. Lebanon views this zone as a violation of its sovereignty and an occupation of its southern lands.
While no confirmation regarding the ceasefire came from Hezbollah, the Israeli military continued its attacks. According to information from an Anadolu correspondent based on eyewitnesses, settlements including Kfar Roumane, Kfar Sir, Zibdine, Choukin, Jebel er-Refi', er-Reyhan, Nabatiye el-Fawka, Habouch, and Adshit were targeted between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM local time.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, the Israeli military announced it had attacked over 150 targets it claimed belonged to Hezbollah in southern and eastern Lebanon since last night. However, field observations revealed that the strikes mostly hit civilian homes and structures.
These attacks followed, according to Israel's announcement, the death of four soldiers, including a battalion commander, after their tanks were hit during an attempted advance in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military claimed Hezbollah violated the ceasefire and that its forces had full operational freedom to eliminate threats.
In a statement, Hezbollah stated that Israel had not adhered to any ceasefire agreement and continued to commit massacres and destroy homes and civilian infrastructure. It also emphasized that it had confronted an attempted advance by the Israeli military towards the Ali al-Tahir Hill overnight and would continue to monitor any kind of attack.
The US-Iran agreement signed on Wednesday evening called for a halt to military operations and respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, the stance within the Israeli government, particularly from far-right ministers, rejects linking any agreement with Iran to halting operations in Lebanon and argues that military activities in southern Lebanon must continue.
According to Lebanese Ministry of Health data, since the large-scale attacks Israel launched on March 2, 3,980 people have been killed, 12,001 injured, and over one million displaced. Israel has occupied some areas for decades and others since the 2023-2024 war, and with the current attacks, it has advanced more than 10 kilometers, a depth not seen in over 25 years.
