The need for humanitarian aid is becoming more urgent ahead of winter for Palestinians living in temporary shelters in Gaza. Ismail al-Thawabta, director-general of the Gaza Government Media Office, said 162,000 of the 270,000 tents used by families in the area had become completely worn out and were no longer usable.
Inspections carried out in settlement and displacement camps found that 60% of the tents urgently needed to be replaced. Al-Thawabta said the existing tents could not provide basic protection against wind, rain and freezing temperatures, adding that children, women and sick people faced serious risks.
Call for aid to Palestinians before winter
Al-Thawabta called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to take action before extreme cold and rainfall began. He urged the delivery of winter relief supplies, as well as tents, to Gaza and warned that failing to address the shelter crisis would have severe consequences for Palestinians during the coming winter.
The first autumn rains in Gaza have heightened fears that the tents of Palestinians whose homes, facilities and infrastructure have been destroyed will be flooded. Many Palestinians continue to live in temporary shelters because of attacks carried out by the Israeli army since October 8, 2023, and the destruction of infrastructure.
Shelter conditions in Gaza
The Palestinian Ministry of Social Development said more than 90% of Gaza's population had been forced to live in worn-out tents, shelters or among the rubble because of the destructive attacks.
The United Nations Children's Fund said recurring winter storms and floods had destroyed thousands of temporary shelters. The organization said families and children were struggling to survive in unsafe conditions amid freezing temperatures.
Humanitarian toll of the attacks in Gaza
According to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 174,000 injured in attacks carried out by the Israeli army since October 8, 2023.
The attacks have completely destroyed 90% of homes, infrastructure and essential service facilities in Gaza.
