During Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s planned visit to Syria on September 13-14, developments in the country’s south and possible steps in response to Israel’s actions in Syria are expected to be on the agenda.
Under the program, Fidan is expected to be received by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and hold talks with Interior Minister Anas Khattab. Fidan and al-Shaibani are also scheduled to hold a joint news conference after their meeting.
Stability and cooperation in Syria
The talks are expected to cover Türkiye-Syria relations, as well as multilateral efforts to establish lasting stability, peace and prosperity in Syria. Strengthening the institutional and legal foundations of cooperation in trade, energy, transport and connectivity will also be among the issues discussed.
Fidan is expected to share his assessments of regional connectivity projects and discuss the integration process in Syria. In this context, recent developments surrounding the Syrian Democratic Forces, particularly the issue of the group dissolving itself, will also be addressed.
Syria’s unity and the situation in the south
The talks will assess the inclusive strengthening of state authority in Syria and the contribution of all segments of society, including Turkmen, to the country’s unity and prosperity on the basis of equal citizenship.
Fidan is expected to express that Türkiye will continue its efforts to protect Syria’s territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty. As part of these efforts, strengthening state institutions, accelerating economic recovery and supporting the restoration of regional connectivity will also be on the agenda.
The visit is also expected to address the situation in southern Syria and possible steps that Türkiye and the international community could take in response to Israel’s actions in Syria.
