Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi, the capital of India, where he was attending meetings held as part of the 18th BRICS Summit. Sisi said all attacks targeting Arab countries must end.
During the meeting, held on Saturday and Sunday alongside the summit sessions, Sisi called for the attacks to stop in order to uphold the principles of good-neighborly relations.
Egypt’s call for a regional solution
Sisi said Egypt’s policy of supporting efforts to restore stability in the region remains unchanged. He said Egypt expects Iran to use all means at its disposal to end the tensions and find a comprehensive, lasting and peaceful solution to the crisis.
Sisi stressed the need to protect the sovereignty of regional countries and safeguard the resources of their peoples. He said preserving the historical and cultural ties that unite Arab peoples would strengthen good-neighborly relations.
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz
The United States and Iran are at odds over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is strategically important for energy and goods shipments. Mutual military attacks between the two countries are taking place as negotiations have reached an impasse.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, while Tehran reported that more than 3,000 people had been killed in the conflict. Americans and Israelis were also killed in Iran’s counterattacks.
Iran also targeted facilities and military equipment in Arab countries that it said belonged to the United States. Civilians were killed and civilian facilities were damaged in some of the attacks, while the countries targeted condemned the attacks and called for them to end.
