Hamas marked the 26th anniversary of the Aqsa Intifada on Monday and called for increased Arab, Muslim and international support to help Palestinians achieve their rights and sustain the resistance.
In its statement, Hamas said it aimed to liberate the Palestinian territories and holy sites. The group called for continued support for Palestinians until they secure their legitimate rights and urged solidarity toward that goal.
Call for political and diplomatic action for Al-Aqsa Mosque
Hamas argued that this anniversary coincided with a period of unprecedented escalation targeting Palestinians and holy sites. The group alleged that, alongside measures targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, there were efforts to protect certain structures, alter the mosque’s identity and erase the features of the holy site.
The statement said Palestinians would not abandon their land, rights, national principles or holy sites. Hamas argued that the plans of the Israeli government would fail.
Hamas also said Palestinians needed to reach agreement on a common strategy. Calling for this strategy to be strengthened through sustained Arab, Muslim and international support, the group urged political, diplomatic, media and popular action against measures targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The beginning of the Intifada
The Aqsa Intifada began on Sept. 28, 2000, after Ariel Sharon, then leader of Israel’s opposition, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem under heavy security.
During the Intifada, which lasted about five years, official figures show that 4,412 Palestinians were killed and 48,322 Palestinians were injured.
