Benjamin Netanyahu said he would block the establishment of a Palestinian state in Gaza or the occupied West Bank as long as he remains in office, ahead of Israel’s parliamentary elections planned for October 27.
The Israeli prime minister said he opposed a Palestinian state coming under Iran’s control. Netanyahu used the Hebrew-derived terms “Judea and Samaria” for Gaza and the West Bank.

Calls for recognition of Palestine
Mansour Abbas, leader of the United Arab List, said Palestine was already a state and that most of the world recognized it.
Abbas called on Israel and the United States to recognize Palestine. Speaking at his party’s conference in the city of Tayibe, Abbas said his party was seeking peace between Israel and Palestine.
Seat projections for Likud
Pre-election opinion polls show that Netanyahu’s Likud party and its coalition partners are falling short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.
Likud currently holds 32 seats. A poll published on Friday projected that the party would fall to 20 seats, while another poll published on August 19 projected that Likud and its far-right and ultra-Orthodox partners would hold a combined 51 seats.
The projection indicates that the bloc would be 10 seats short of the number needed to secure a majority in parliament.
