Diplomatic contacts on implementing the Gaza ceasefire are continuing as a Hamas delegation met with Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, on Sunday. The delegation discussed implementing the ceasefire and steps to complete U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan.
Hamas said it valued Egypt’s efforts to strengthen the ceasefire. The talks focused on easing the hardships faced by Gaza’s population, launching the reconstruction of the territory and the ceasefire roadmap.
Hamas raises Israeli violations
Hamas reiterated its commitment to Trump’s Gaza plan. The delegation also assessed political and on-the-ground developments in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Hamas said the meeting addressed Israel’s daily violations and assessments that Israel had backed away from the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement and Trump’s Gaza plan. Israel’s announcement that it rejected the roadmap was also discussed.
Violations against Palestinian detainees were also among the issues discussed. Hamas described these practices as a dangerous and destructive policy requiring attention at the regional and international levels.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the contacts aimed to inform the mediators about Israel’s violations and ensure that Tel Aviv complies with the Gaza roadmap. The delegation was headed by Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya.
Sisi and Kushner discuss Gaza agreement
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Jared Kushner, Trump’s adviser and son-in-law, in New Alamein in the north of the country. The Egyptian presidency said the meeting addressed developments in the Palestinian territories and the Middle East.
Sisi said all parties to the Gaza agreement must fulfill their obligations. He also said various crises in the region must be resolved to preserve regional stability.
Jared Kushner also met with senior Hamas officials. The meeting was attended by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Nickolay Mladenov, the Peace Council’s high representative for Gaza, and Turkish, Egyptian and Qatari officials.
The meeting focused on turning the commitments made into verifiable implementation steps. Kushner is scheduled to travel to Israel on Monday to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
