Three people were killed and five others injured in attacks and bombardments targeting civilians in Yemen’s Taiz governorate. Government sources in Taiz said two of the civilians killed in the attack on the southern Sabr al-Mawadim district were women.
Five civilians, including two women, were also injured in Houthi bombardments of the Shaqab area south of Taiz and the Akaka area to the west.

Yemeni army announces that 16 Houthis were killed
The Yemeni army said it had repelled attacks in Taiz governorate the previous day and that 16 Iran-backed Houthis had been killed.
According to the army’s statement, clashes on the Shaqab front lasted approximately eight hours. Airstrikes were also carried out against Houthi positions at the al-Hanjar site in the Dabab area west of Taiz, as well as on the al-Muqababa and al-Kamil hills. The Houthis have not yet commented on the civilian casualties or the toll announced by the army.
Clashes intensify around Taiz
Clashes in Taiz began last month when the Houthis launched an attack from Yemen’s Red Sea coastal governorate of Hudaydah toward Taiz and advanced toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Fighting continues to intensify in Taiz governorate, which is located in a mountainous area.

The Iran-backed Houthis have controlled Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, and some areas since September 2014. Coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia have supported the Yemeni government against the Houthis since March 2015.
