Egyptian footballer Imam Ashour became his country's fourth player to score in a World Cup with his goal against Belgium in their opening match of the 2026 tournament. However, a last-minute conceded goal resulted in a draw, causing them to miss a chance for a historic victory.
In a statement to FIFA, Ashour said, "Scoring this goal for Egypt in the World Cup was an extraordinary moment. I felt we were going to beat Belgium, but there is some disappointment because of the draw."
The 28-year-old player added, "We have two more matches ahead and we must continue to believe in our capacity and fight to reach the second round."
Ashour stated, "We did not come to the World Cup as 'honorary guests,' our aim is to go as far as possible."
Message from His First Coach
Neshat Fathi, Ashour's first coach at the Semenhavin Academy where he began his career, sent a message to the player via FIFA. In his message, Fathi said, "I have great hopes for you during this tournament and I want you to prove you have deserved this position since your first steps at the Senbelavin Academy."
Ashour also spoke about his coach, saying, "I see him as a second father, he was always by my side and constantly supported me."
A Challenging Career Journey
Imam Ashour began his professional career at age 17 with a transfer to Gazlı Mahalle. He subsequently played for Sınır Muhafızları, Zamalek, and Al Ahly. During his four seasons at Zamalek, he won two league championships and two Egypt Cups.
After a brief experience in Denmark in 2023, Ashour returned to Al Ahly, where he won two more league titles and became the league's top scorer in the 2023-2024 season. He also won the African Champions League.
Egypt is now focusing on its second match against New Zealand to secure its first World Cup win and advance to the knockout stage.
