Iran declared its determination to maintain dominance over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In a statement to state television, Iranian official Gharibabadi said that Tehran has presented a clear proposal in the negotiations with Oman. According to this proposal, one route in the strait would be entirely under Iran's control, while a section of the other route would also remain under Iranian supervision.
Gharibabadi stressed that if Oman does not accept this proposal, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed, and said, 'We are ready for the resumption of war.' Noting that Iran in no way recognizes the southern route of the strait, the official stated, 'This scenario is definite and Iran will not accept any other formula.'
Latest situation in negotiations and Iran's conditions
The Iranian official said that if no agreement is reached, Iran will proceed on its own path. He noted that even if an agreement is reached, the strait will not be opened immediately, citing issues such as war damages and the US violating the agreement. He added that the final decision will be evaluated by decision-makers in the country.
Gharibabadi reported that Oman wanted to bring in a country to clear mines in the southern part of the strait, but Tehran did not allow it. He stated that trying to force Iran to negotiate with a naval blockade will not work, as Iran, which has been subjected to heavy sanctions for many years, is experienced in managing this situation.
Relations with the US and Iran's policy
Gharibabadi disclosed that they have not requested negotiations with the US in the last 15 days. The official noted that the Americans sent a message through Oman that they would not conduct a military operation against Iran, and said that Tehran is currently only talking with Oman about the strait, and depending on the outcome, talks with the US will be considered.
Emphasizing that the Strait of Hormuz has become part of Iran's national security, Gharibabadi said, 'Iran's policy is that the Strait of Hormuz never returns to its pre-war status.' He stated that Tehran is not even worried about the resumption of war to consolidate its sovereignty over the strait.
New defense capability and warning to Europe
Gharibabadi stressed that all European warships attempting to approach the Strait of Hormuz will be legitimate targets. 'We have discovered a new defense capability called the Strait of Hormuz. The world must know that Iran is increasing its defense tools and we cannot give them up in any way,' he said.
Pointing out that the arrangements to be applied to the strait will have long-term effects on Iran's security, Gharibabadi commented, 'If the arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz return to the previous state, our success in the war will not be complete.' He also mentioned that generating revenue from the strait is among their priorities, and that their goals are both to exercise sovereignty and to earn revenue.
