Iran announced that any possible attack on its oil tankers would be met by targeting US bases and interests in the region. The statement came from Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which is responsible for war management within Iran’s Armed Forces.
The headquarters claimed that the US military had threatened to target three Iranian oil tankers. It said any attack on Iranian vessels would result in a severe response from Iran’s Armed Forces against US bases and interests in the region.
Monitoring capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz
Iranian Revolutionary Guard spokesman Hossein Mahbi also said there was no technological means capable of deceiving Iran’s capabilities monitoring the Strait of Hormuz.
Mahbi argued that sovereignty in the Persian Gulf belonged to technologically superior Iranian youth and called on the United States to leave the region. The phrase “Bay of Pigs” in the statement referred to the bay in Cuba.
Tensions between the US and Iran
The chronology of tensions between Iran and the United States stated that the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, while Iran responded with attacks on Israel and US targets in the region. The clashes later escalated again in the following months.
Washington and Tehran signed an agreement on June 18 regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but disputes over the strait’s security disrupted its implementation.
The United States reorganized its attacks against Iran between July 8 and 24, while Iran targeted US military facilities and equipment in Arab countries.
