Iranian President Pezeshkian, who is in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Pezeshkian said Iran had not withdrawn from the negotiating table but no longer trusted the United States because of past experiences.
Pezeshkian said Iran wanted peace and security in the region, adding that his country would not yield to external pressure.
Pezeshkian stressed that the Islamabad Accord reached with the United States but never implemented should be restored and that the commitments agreed upon should be honored.
In a post from his US-based X account, Pezeshkian said the conditions necessary for serious negotiations to move forward needed to be created.
Pezeshkian also said they appreciated Chinese President Xi Jinping's stance and support for returning to the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States.
Guterres calls for a political solution
Guterres said efforts should continue to find a political and diplomatic solution despite the complex circumstances.
