Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi held a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha. The meeting addressed deepening relations between Iraq and Qatar and the role of diplomacy in resolving regional issues.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's media office, al-Zaidi expressed Baghdad's determination to expand cooperation with Qatar. The leaders discussed ways to develop areas of joint work.
The meeting stressed the need to rely on dialogue and diplomacy in resolving ongoing regional crises, and noted that implementing the provisions agreed upon in the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran would contribute to regional security and stability, including freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Preparations for Iran Visit
The Doha talks took place ahead of al-Zaidi's visit to Iran this week. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that the visit would focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Ahead of the visit, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Relations Mohammed Hussein Bahr al-Ulum held a preparatory meeting with Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad, Kazem Al Sadeq. The two reviewed al-Zaidi's Tehran program and the memoranda of understanding planned to be signed in various fields.
The Doha talks and the planned Tehran visit stand out as part of Baghdad's efforts to position dialogue, rather than conflict, as the key to lasting security in the region.
