Iraqi Shiite religious and political leader Muqtada al-Sadr described the end of the presence of U.S. and international coalition forces in the country as the completion of Iraq’s independence.
Al-Sadr called for all weapons in Iraq to be placed under state control. Thanking those who had previously fought against U.S. forces, al-Sadr announced that a decision had been made to dissolve the Mahdi Army, which he led, and transform it into the Imam Mahdi Supporters Foundation.

Call for compensation for damage caused during the occupation
Al-Sadr said the United States should pay compensation for the damage Iraq suffered during the occupation and called on all parties to apply to the relevant courts for this purpose.

Al-Sadr warned Washington against interfering in Iraq’s internal affairs, saying that such an approach could lead to a rupture in relations between the two countries and cause political, economic and religious harm to Iraq.
Al-Sadr also called on the United States to maintain a diplomatic approach in its relations with the Iraqi government and people and not to become involved in issues concerning the country’s sovereignty.

Call for political leaders to step down
Following the departure of U.S. and international coalition forces from Iraq, al-Sadr called on political leaders in office to withdraw from politics and make way for new politicians.
