Israel’s Central Elections Committee ruled in favor of the Jewish Power party after considering petitions seeking to prevent it from participating in the October 27 election. The request to bar the far-right party, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, was rejected by 19 votes to 10, with one member abstaining.
Democrats Party sought ban
The Democrats Party, led by Yair Golan, applied to the Central Elections Committee to prevent the Jewish Power party from participating in the election. The party argued that the party and its candidate list incited racism and harmed democracy.
Democrats Party lawmaker Gilad Kariv said during the hearing that, although barring the party was an extraordinary measure, it was necessary because of the racist nature of the party list and its leaders.
Other candidacy petitions
At its Wednesday session, the committee ruled to bar the United Arab List alliance and the United Arab List, as well as Knesset member Ofer Cassif and election candidate Sami Abu Shehadeh.
At sessions scheduled to conclude on Thursday, the committee is expected to consider petitions seeking to prevent the Religious Zionism and Identity lists from participating in the election.
34-member political body
The Central Elections Committee is made up of representatives of the parliamentary groups in the Knesset whose term has ended. While representation is determined according to the number of seats held by the groups in parliament, the governing coalition holds a majority on the 34-member body.
The body is responsible for ensuring that Israel’s electoral process is conducted in an orderly and reliable manner from its beginning through its completion.
Allegations concerning the Netanyahu government
Israel’s government has been led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since the end of December 2022. Netanyahu faces corruption charges that could result in a prison sentence if he is convicted.
Netanyahu has also been asked to appear before the International Criminal Court over allegations that he committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip since 2024.
