The Israeli government has officially launched a process to build new Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and legalize existing illegal outposts. The decision, taken by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, accelerates steps toward the annexation of Palestinian land in the region.
According to a statement from Netanyahu's office, the decision was taken after an armed attack near the town of Tel, southwest of Nablus, in which an Israeli was killed and three others were wounded.
Harsh measures against Palestinian villages
The same statement said Netanyahu and Katz instructed the Israeli army to demolish the home of the Palestinian alleged to have carried out the attack. It was also decided that the army would collect weapons from Palestinian villages that Israel labels as 'terrorist,' cancel work permits for residents of those villages, and conduct large-scale military operations there.
It was also announced that Israeli forces were granted 'freedom of movement' in West Bank cities and towns in order to 'eliminate terror.'
Casualties in the clashes
The decisions came hours after an attack by the Israeli army and settlers on the town of Tel. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, four Palestinians were killed in that attack, and four others were wounded, three of them seriously.
The Israeli side, meanwhile, announced that one settler was killed and three were wounded in the same area. Following the incident, the Israeli army placed the city of Nablus and surrounding villages under siege, while settlers continued attacks on many villages to the west and south of the city.
Israeli army: Attack was not planned
An investigation by the Israeli army revealed that the armed attack that killed the Israeli was not planned by Palestinians. According to the investigation, the incident occurred after settlers entered the area without coordinating with the army.
The army described the settlers' entry into the area in this manner as 'dangerous behavior,' and said, 'No one has the right to do as they please.'
Escalation of violence since October 2023
The West Bank has witnessed a marked increase in attacks by the Israeli army and settlers since October 2023. According to official Palestinian figures, 1,182 Palestinians have been killed, thousands wounded, and around 24,000 Palestinians detained during this period.
