The Israeli cabinet unanimously adopted a resolution formally recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide. The resolution was brought to the cabinet agenda by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.
Sa’ar described the move as a “moral and historical obligation,” adding that Israel would also condemn any attempts to deny, belittle, or distort the Armenian Genocide.
Following the cabinet approval, the draft resolution will be submitted to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. This step follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s individual description of the 1915 events as genocide in August 2025.
Turkiye had previously characterized Netanyahu’s statement as an attempt at exploitation driven by political motives. The official recognition by Israel could trigger a new crisis in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
