The Qalandia refugee camp north of occupied Jerusalem faced demolition notices and raids on Tuesday evening. Israeli forces distributed notices targeting Palestinian-owned structures on the camp’s Matar Street, and the Jerusalem Governorate announced the development in a statement.
Israeli forces also raided the Kafr Aqab neighborhood and the Qalandia refugee camp on the same day, forcing staff from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to leave the agency’s Qalandia Education Center.
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered the UNRWA facility and announced that an operation had been launched to evacuate the building. Ben-Gvir said there was no place for the refugee agency in Jerusalem or Israel.
Restrictions on UNRWA operations
In October 2024, the Knesset passed a law preventing UNRWA from operating in Israel. The law revoked the agency’s privileges and prohibited Israeli officials from maintaining official contact with UNRWA. The legislation took effect at the beginning of last year.
Raids on Qalandia and Kafr Aqab
Israeli forces launched a large-scale operation in Kafr Aqab and the Qalandia refugee camp at the beginning of this month. Homes were raided, some Palestinians were detained and some residences were used as military posts during the operation.
Since Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, raids by the Israeli army and attacks by Jewish settlers have increased in the occupied West Bank.
