Damascus seeks a security agreement with Israel
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said on July 26 that the Damascus administration was seeking to reach a security agreement with Israel with the participation of some countries.
Al-Sharaa said such an agreement could pave the way for comprehensive peace without Syria relinquishing its rights over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Israel has occupied Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. Following the fall of the Baath regime in late 2024, Israel declared that the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement was no longer valid and took control of several strategic areas, including the buffer zone on the Syrian side and the Syrian section of Mount Hermon.
