Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov harshly criticized the West's Ukraine policy, describing the condition of a ceasefire before negotiations as an ultimatum. Speaking to TASS news agency, Lavrov claimed that following this, military forces led by France and Britain would be sent into Ukraine.
Lavrov asserted that Western countries are trying to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and divide it. He argued that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is constantly retreating on the front and turning to acts of terrorism out of desperation.
The Russian foreign minister stated, “The Westerners want a ceasefire established before negotiations. Then, they will send military forces into Ukraine under the leadership of France and Britain. Only after that will they sit down at the negotiating table. This is an ultimatum.”
Lavrov stated that the United States and Europe are not ready to build a relationship with Russia based on equality and mutual respect, which is why alternative power centers like BRICS are emerging. Emphasizing Russia’s determination to protect its independence and borders, Lavrov underlined that there must be no interference in its internal affairs.
Recalling that former Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned in 1999 and transferred power to Vladimir Putin, Lavrov used the words, “At that time, he (Putin) was the only person who could save Russia. This was a historic turning point.”
Lavrov, who said that when Putin came to power he was open to an equal strategic partnership with the West, but now former allies are waging war against Russia through Ukraine, declared: “Now our former allies, with varying degrees of madness—London more, the US somewhat less—are fighting against us through the hands of Ukraine, giving Ukraine modern weapons.”
Lavrov added that the West is imposing sanctions to hinder Russia’s development.
