The ports of Beirut and Tripoli in Lebanon joined the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor Ports Club at a signing ceremony held in New Delhi, India.
Lebanon was represented at the signing of the joint communiqué by Marwan al-Nafiy, chairman of the Beirut Port Board of Directors, and Iskandar Bendeli, chairman of the Tripoli Port Board of Directors.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the two ports’ admission to the club as a significant institutional achievement for the country.
Aoun said the agreement reached in New Delhi offered a real opportunity to strengthen partnerships and develop the logistics and trade sectors in line with global standards. He said the move reinforced Lebanon’s presence on the map of regional and international cooperation.
An open cooperation platform among ports
Beirut Port management said the IMEC Ports Club operates as an open platform that promotes dialogue and cooperation among ports without establishing a new institutional structure.
The platform’s areas of focus include improving logistics links and supply chains, facilitating trade, energy cooperation, reducing carbon emissions, digitalization and data integration.
The corridor’s two main routes
India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2023 to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which aims to improve trade, energy transfers and digital connectivity.
IMEC consists of two main routes: the Eastern Corridor, which connects India with West Asia and the Middle East, and the Northern Corridor, which connects the region with Europe.
The route is planned to run by sea from Mumbai, India, to Dede Port in the United Arab Emirates, then by rail through the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan to Israel’s Port of Haifa. From Haifa, a sea link to Greece’s Port of Piraeus and then a land connection to Europe are envisaged.
The IMEC Ports Club was officially launched in May following a memorandum of understanding signed between Indian and French ports in February.
