Crowds waving Palestinian flags marched through the Moroccan city of Marrakech at night to protest the decision to upgrade Morocco’s relations with Israel from liaison offices to embassies.
The march was part of protests called by the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalization in cities across the country on September 25, 26 and 27. The front described the decision as an escalation of normalization and a move to make it more deeply official.
“Normal relations cannot be built with an abnormal entity founded on occupation and genocide,” the front said in a statement, adding that “Palestine is not a bargaining chip, nor a cause that can be normalized.”
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar agreed on September 16 in New York, at a meeting hosted by US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, to open embassies and appoint ambassadors for the first time, increase flights and conclude investment protection and double taxation agreements by the end of the year.
The two countries resumed ties in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, the relationship has largely been kept out of public view amid frequent protests in Morocco.
