2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay called for increased international pressure on Israel to protect Palestinians’ rights.
Pillay said Palestinians had been struggling for freedom for more than 90 years and noted that the international community’s attention and support had been important throughout this process.
She cited sanctions against apartheid as an example
Pillay said coordinated international action and economic sanctions had played an effective role in ending South Africa’s apartheid regime. She called for a similar approach to be applied against Israel.

Pillay said the United Nations Security Council had various tools at its disposal to address violations of international law, including economic sanctions, and said governments sometimes placed their political interests ahead of international peace and justice.
Emphasizing that inaction was the only unacceptable course, Pillay called on states to consistently apply the rules of international law and cooperate in criminal investigations.
She called on states to uphold international law
Pillay said every state had a responsibility to prevent genocide and that governments should fulfill their international obligations independently of their political interests.

Pillay also called on countries to condemn the United States’ sanctions against the International Criminal Court and support the court in overcoming obstacles to its work. She said she believed the court’s staff would continue seeking justice despite the pressure.
Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 9, 2026, for her contributions to strengthening peace and international law.
