Floods affecting Nepal’s Rasuwa region near the border with China and surrounding areas have caused a heavy loss of life. The Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said in a statement on Sunday that the death toll had risen to 734 and that search and identification efforts were continuing.
According to the authority, 2,498 people remain missing. The missing include 589 foreign nationals.
US aid for those affected by the disaster
The US State Department announced that more than $3.6 million in humanitarian aid would be sent to Nepal. The aid package also includes emergency food assistance that could reach 10,000 households.
An official toll previously released by Nepalese authorities listed 616 deaths and 2,500 missing people.
Seven killed in floods in Tibet
The number of people killed in floods in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has also risen to seven.
Seismic activity before the floods
The floods that occurred in the Rasuwa region on Wednesday destroyed dozens of bridges and damaged roads. Helicopters were sent to the area to support search-and-rescue efforts.
The US Geological Survey said a tremor had occurred in the region earlier the same day, before the floods. The agency later updated its data, stating that the source of the magnitude 5.2 seismic activity was a landslide.
The breakup of ice masses in mountainous areas caused avalanches, which in turn led to the floods.
