Haaretz reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that Abbas Kamel, Egypt’s then-intelligence chief, came to Israel shortly before Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.
In an interview with Israel’s Channel 14 television, Netanyahu said Kamel stayed in Israel for 59 minutes. Netanyahu said he did not know which Israeli official Kamel had met and referred to the matter as the “deep state.”
The Israeli prime minister insisted that he had neither met nor spoken with Kamel. Netanyahu also said that he attended a memorial ceremony for Israeli soldiers during the visit.
Netanyahu had previously described reports that Kamel warned him about Hamas’s impending attack as “fake news.”

Warnings before the Hamas attack
The Atlantic magazine wrote at the end of September that Kamel traveled to Israel on September 26, 2023, 11 days before the attack, and warned that Hamas was preparing a major assault. The magazine also claimed that Kamel wanted Israel to offer Hamas economic concessions to prevent a conflict.
The Wall Street Journal also claimed last month that Kamel called Netanyahu by phone days before the attack and that two earlier warnings from Egypt had been disregarded.
The New York Times reported in September that United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan warned Netanyahu about a possible major Hamas attack, but claimed that Netanyahu did not relay the warning to security officials.
