Somali president says Israel plans naval base in Berbera
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Israel wants a naval base in Berbera to get closer to the Gulf states and Iran.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Israel plans to set up a naval base in the city of Berbera and use its airport, arguing that the real aim is to move closer to the Gulf states and Iran. Speaking to Al Jazeera’s “Al-Muqabala” programme, he said Somalia would under no circumstances accept an Israeli presence in the country and that the people of Somaliland fully oppose it.
Israel became the first UN member state to recognise Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, on December 26, 2025.
