The consolidation of various Peshmerga units in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region under the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs was completed on Monday.
Speaking at the unification ceremony, Peshmerga Minister Shoreş Ismail announced that the process had concluded. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Zeydi congratulated the people of the region and Peshmerga personnel, saying the arrangement would strengthen Iraq’s security and unity in defense decision-making.
Zeydi highlighted the importance of unifying security and military forces within constitutional and legal frameworks. He said improving coordination among the various components of the Iraqi armed forces and their affiliated units would also contribute to national security.
The forces’ capabilities will be strengthened
Masrour Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, stressed the need to strengthen the capabilities of the Peshmerga forces and maintain coordination with the Iraqi army following the unification.
The unification was carried out as part of a program to reform and modernize the forces in the region. The program includes integrating different units, reviewing the organizational structure and armament, and consolidating systems.
The Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq said the arrangement aims to increase the Peshmerga forces’ capacity to combat threats and prevent the resurgence of Daesh.
