Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that Iran would allow UN nuclear inspectors into the country. Asked about it on CBS’s Face the Nation, he replied, “That is absolutely correct,” adding: “If they wish to come in and have inspections, we can reach accords and agreements.”
“Developing nuclear weapons is haram,” Pezeshkian said. On Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after seven days and restart talks, he said: “If they operate according to that framework, I think all of us will abide by it.”
Pointing to the “atmosphere of distrust that has developed between Iran and the United States,” he said, “Every day, they increase the sanctions against us. Every day, they threaten us,” and argued that Washington must show it does not intend to overthrow Iran’s government.
The interview was recorded in New York on September 25 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, before The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump had rejected Iran’s proposal. A 60-day ceasefire between the two countries collapsed in July.
