Syria’s security campaign targeting air force officers of the ousted Assad regime is continuing. The Counter-Terrorism Administration said it arrested pilot Khaldoun Hussein Mubarak in the Latakia countryside, after more than 15 pilot officers were detained in Tartus, Latakia and Aleppo in September.
Mubarak is accused of committing war crimes and targeting residential areas during the years of the Syrian revolution. The campaign is aimed at officers and pilots suspected of involvement in abuses against civilians.
Mubarak became known in March 2020, when his warplane was shot down near Saraqib in eastern Idlib during a bombing sortie. He survived by parachuting out and later went into hiding.
Bashar al-Assad’s regime fell in December 2024, and Syria’s new authorities have since pursued former officials and officers accused of abuses.
