Mohamed al-Khalifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, invited Saddam Haftar, deputy commander of the eastern Libya forces, to Qatar to continue discussions and coordination after meeting him in Benghazi.
Haftar received al-Khalifi and his accompanying delegation on Thursday at the headquarters of the eastern Libya forces’ command. The meeting addressed ways to develop relations between Libya and Qatar and increase cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
Developments in Libya and the region discussed
The meeting covered political developments in Libya and the region, as well as steps to advance bilateral relations. The parties assessed opportunities for cooperation that would serve their common interests.
Al-Khalifi also held talks in Tripoli
Before visiting Benghazi, al-Khalifi held separate meetings in Tripoli with Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, prime minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity; Mohamed al-Menfi, president of the Presidential Council; and Mohamed Takala, president of the High Council of State. The Qatari official held these meetings on Wednesday.
Libya has two separate administrations
Libya has the internationally recognized Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli and headed by Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, and the government of Osama Hammad, based in Benghazi and appointed by the House of Representatives. Hammad’s government is backed by the eastern forces led by Khalifa Haftar.
