Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh on Saturday in Doha.
According to a statement from the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting addressed bilateral cooperation relations and ways to support and develop them, and recent regional developments were discussed.
Al Thani reiterated his country's full support for Libya's unity, stability and development goals, the Libyan political process, relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and all peaceful solutions that preserve Libya's sovereignty.
A US initiative to resolve the crisis has been discussed in Libya for months. US President Donald Trump's Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, confirmed the existence of the initiative in June but did not provide details.
The initiative reportedly envisages merging the Government of National Unity headed by Dbeibeh with the House of Representatives government headed by Osama Hammad into a single government under Dbeibeh's leadership, and establishing a new Presidential Council headed by Saddam Haftar, deputy commander of the eastern forces.
The military institution in Libya is divided between forces commanded by Khalifa Haftar in the east and forces loyal to the Government of National Unity in the west. The military institution is conducting a unification dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and within the framework of the Joint Military Committee (5+5), composed of five officers each from the east and west.
Libyans hope that the political and armed conflicts and transitional periods that have continued since the overthrow of the Muammar Gaddafi regime (1969-2011) will end with the hoped-for elections.
