Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgiy Borisenko and Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Miao Deyu held political consultations to assess developments in the Middle East and Africa.
According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, July 22, the meeting focused on the escalating tensions in the Middle East. It stressed the need to immediately halt the clashes between the US and Iran and to return to a political-diplomatic process based on the "Islamabad Memorandum" to achieve a comprehensive agreement. The efforts of Pakistani and Arab mediators were supported.
The statement said, "The task of external actors is not to fuel contradictions but to encourage movement toward peace," and noted that the Russian side shared its proposals within the framework of the updated Collective Security Concept for the Persian Gulf region.
Palestinian issue a priority
The diplomats agreed that adverse developments in the Middle East must not overshadow the region's priority task: resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
They stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the rapid normalization of the situation in the West Bank. The two sides reaffirmed their joint commitment to a comprehensive solution based on international law, which envisages the establishment of an independent, territorially integral and viable Palestinian state.
The meeting also addressed the situations in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Libya. The parties shared their experiences regarding activities within the framework of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum.
Conflicts and cooperation in Africa
They paid special attention to preventing and resolving conflicts on the African continent. They discussed coordinating support from Russia and China for African countries in overcoming security challenges, based on the principle of "African solutions to African problems."
The consultations concluded that Russia's and China's approaches to crises in the Middle East and Africa are closely aligned or coincide. This, they noted, lays the groundwork for further strengthening foreign policy coordination between Moscow and Beijing to help effectively resolve regional disputes on the basis of international law, while respecting the balance of interests of all relevant parties.
The statement also highlighted the mutual desire of Russia and China to contribute to Africa becoming a distinctive and effective global development center and to help African countries strengthen their sovereignty in all its dimensions.
