Saddam Haftar, deputy commander of the eastern Libyan forces, and UAE Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister Mansour bin Zayed discussed expanding cooperation between Libya and the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
In a statement on the meeting, the eastern Libyan forces stressed the importance of strengthening ties between Libya and the UAE, which are based on fraternal and historic relations. The statement said the sides agreed to develop cooperation serving their common interests.
Regional stability and security on the agenda
The meeting addressed several issues of mutual interest and the latest developments in the region, as well as efforts to support stability and safeguard regional security.
Saddam Haftar praised the UAE’s stance toward and support for Libya. He reaffirmed support for standing by Libya in the face of the challenges confronting the region and for initiatives aimed at strengthening regional stability and security.
Military division in Libya
Libya’s military structure remains divided between forces in the west affiliated with the internationally recognized Government of National Unity and forces in the east led by Khalifa Haftar.
The sides are conducting dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to unite this structure. The efforts are continuing within the framework of the Joint Military Commission, known as the 5+5 committee, which includes five military officials from eastern Libya and five from the west.
The dialogue is being conducted as part of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed by the parties to the conflict in Libya in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2020.
