Saudi Arabia described Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as a step that violates international law.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the recognition violated the UN Charter and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Riyadh cites Resolution 497
The ministry’s statement specifically cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 497, adopted in 1981. The resolution declared Israel’s application of its laws, jurisdiction and administration to the occupied Golan Heights null and void and said it could have no effect under international law.
Saudi Arabia argued that such positions do not contribute to peace efforts. Riyadh also said the steps moved away from the broad international consensus on the occupied Golan Heights and strengthened attempts to impose faits accomplis in the region.

Saudi Arabia calls on Colombia to reverse its decision
Riyadh reiterated its position that the Golan Heights are occupied Syrian Arab territory. It said that no measure or decision aimed at changing the territory’s legal status could establish any rights or legitimacy.
Saudi Arabia called on Colombia to review the decision it took on August 10 and to adhere to international law and United Nations resolutions. The statement also called for efforts to promote security, stability and a just and lasting peace in the region to be supported.
Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East War.
