Syrian President Shara made assessments on domestic and regional developments during a meeting with opinion leaders and prominent figures in the Damascus countryside.
Addressing claims that Syria would intervene in Lebanon, Shara said these rumors are not true. He stated, "There are still various rumors circulating that Syria will intervene in Lebanon. However, these are not true."
Shara emphasized that Syria's stance is clear: they advocate for stopping the war, strengthening state institutions, increasing economic integration, and calming the situation in Lebanon as much as possible.
Sensitive Process in Lebanon
Touching on relations with Lebanon, Shara noted that the country is going through a sensitive period due to war and various crises, which affects both Lebanon and Syria.
He described the demarcation of borders between Syria and Lebanon as a complex issue unresolved for many years. Lebanese officials have raised the matter multiple times, but there are more pressing priorities under current conditions.
Shara acknowledged longstanding issues between the two countries, mentioning negative memories in Lebanon regarding Syrian interventions and discomfort in Syria over Hezbollah's activities in Lebanon.
For this reason, he said negotiations on border demarcation have been postponed for now. There are many technical and political issues awaiting resolution in the border file, especially concerning the Shebaa Farms issue.
Shara stressed that the border demarcation process should not lead to new disputes. He pointed out that the current priority should be economic cooperation and development projects that contribute to Lebanon's stability.
He also recalled that there are approximately 1.4 million displaced Syrians in Lebanon, which represents a significant humanitarian and economic burden for both countries.
