Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Russia lacks the capability to launch a large-scale attack against NATO amid the war in Ukraine, adding that the alliance should be prepared for more limited moves that could create divisions.
Sikorski spoke after Poland announced last week that it had received information from various sources indicating that Russia was “preparing something big” this year. Asked what Russia was planning, he said only Russian President Vladimir Putin could know the answer.
The Polish foreign minister said NATO should not allow itself to be manipulated and must be able to respond rapidly as an alliance to possible provocations.
Sikorski said Moscow could use a smaller-scale initiative to trigger debate among NATO allies. He said such a development could put European and U.S. allies at odds over whether NATO’s Article 5, which provides for collective defense, should be invoked.
Sikorski also said Russia could continue its ongoing activities in a more aggressive manner. Western governments accuse Moscow of carrying out sabotage operations and violating airspace as part of a hybrid warfare campaign targeting NATO and European Union countries.
