Injuries have been reported after tourists encountered surgeonfish off the Sharm El Sheikh coast in the Red Sea.
Last week, Russian tourists shared complaints of 'needle marks and scratches' on social media after encountering surgeonfish. The tourists noted that not all beaches had signs indicating the need for precautions.
Expert recommendations
Trained diving and water sports expert Abdesselam Aud said, 'The surgeonfish is not the first aggressor; maintaining a safe distance and respecting marine fauna ensure tourists' safety.'
Aud stated that the surgeonfish uses its sharp spines, just like a scalpel, only to defend itself against predators when it feels threatened.
Walid Hasan, director of the natural reserves management in South Sinai governorate, advised tourists to stay away from nests and spawning grounds during the fish's breeding period.
Hasan explained, 'Any protective behavior of the fish is related to safeguarding its nest and eggs during the breeding period.'
The expert emphasized that incidents involving this fish in Sharm El Sheikh's tourist activities within the protected areas have been rare over the decades.
