Syria has achieved a significant milestone in wheat production after years of war and economic hardship. The Syrian Grain Corporation announced that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in this staple food.
Deputy Director General of the Corporation, Ahmed Kadun, told SANA that the amount of wheat procured from various provinces reached 2.7 million tons. Kadun stressed that this figure exceeds Syria's annual wheat need of 2.55 million tons, confirming that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in this product.
Bounty after drought
This development shows that Syrian agriculture is recovering after a difficult period. According to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), wheat production in the 2025 season had dropped to between 900,000 and 1.1 million tons due to severe drought. This season, improved rainfall, expanded cultivated areas, and the return of the key grain region of Jazira to the agricultural plan led to a significant increase in the harvest.
Storage and procurement processes
Ahmed Kadun said that wheat procurement from farmers will continue as long as the flow of produce continues, so no final closing date has been set. He noted that most procurement centers have effectively ceased operations because farmers in their areas have exhausted their marketable produce.
Providing information on storage, Kadun said the corporation is following a multi-layered strategy to cope with the volume pressure. He noted that wheat is directed to silos and small silos, where it undergoes periodic sterilization and can be stored for years without spoiling. Excess quantities are stored in closed, prepared, and sterilized warehouses, as well as in open areas for short, controlled periods. He added that open-air storage is carried out with technical procedures including ground insulation, special covers, and sterilization.
Kadun stated that the corporation continues to rehabilitate and expand silos and small silos in various provinces, with the aim of increasing storage capacity to accommodate future harvests.
A milestone in the recovery process
The declaration of wheat self-sufficiency is seen as an important step in Syria's recovery process following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8, 2024. In a country whose agricultural infrastructure was severely damaged during the war years, the current government is focused on revitalizing the agricultural sector and increasing domestic production.
