Syria’s Interior Ministry announced that former Major General Ahmed Muhammad Ismail, who served as chief of staff of the Republican Guard during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, had been detained.
According to a statement issued by the ministry on Saturday evening, Ismail was arrested by internal security forces and held various command positions in forces affiliated with the former government during his military career. No information was provided about the place or time of his detention.
Ismail’s military career
Ismail began his military service as a platoon commander. He later served as a company commander in the second battalion of the 101st Airborne Regiment.
Syria’s Interior Ministry said Ismail was promoted to head of operations of the same regiment in early 2016. The ministry’s statement said Ismail had directly participated in managing military attacks on Aleppo, Daraa and Eastern Ghouta during the war from 2011 to 2024.
Ismail later served as chief of staff of the Republican Guard for six months. He was then appointed deputy commander of the 14th Division, which specialized in airborne operations, and remained in that position for one year.
Ismail subsequently assumed command of the same division and remained in the post until the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad government on December 8, 2024.
Investigation continues
The ministry said the relevant authorities were continuing their investigation into Ismail and working to complete the legal and judicial procedures.
Since the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad government, some officers, officials and security personnel who served under the former government have been detained in Syria on grounds of links to violations committed between 2000 and 2024.
