A new period in Brazil’s diplomatic representation in Syria took shape as Eduardo Barbosa began his duties in Damascus. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani accepted a copy of Barbosa’s credentials on Thursday.
The ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Damascus, Syria’s capital. Barbosa thereby began serving as Brazil’s new ambassador to Syria.
Change in Brazil’s representation in Damascus
The acceptance of the credentials was one of the steps taken as Brazil and Syria reorganized their diplomatic representation during the tenure of Syria’s new administration.
Brazil evacuated its embassy in Damascus on security grounds after the government of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown on December 8, 2024. While the country’s diplomatic personnel moved to Lebanon, the embassy continued providing basic consular services remotely.
Damascus expands ties with Latin America
Syria’s relations with Latin America have also gained momentum recently. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani visited Brazil on November 6, 2025, and attended the Climate Summit held in the city of Belém.
The visit was the first event in decades at which a Syrian president attended a climate summit in Brazil.
